Such a well composed poetic tribute to a man on death row. I cannot imagine the turmoil that those prisoners must go through, and the get commuted to life, even though dreary, my seem like joy.

Brilliant memories brought to life; to be the officer leading the inmate to the noose takes guts. I think hanging belongs in the Middle Ages. Today, the prisoner is drugged up until the day he is given a barbiturate to calm him down before the needle that will stop his heart is given. Man doesn't give the final dose; a mechanical gadget sets it free to kill. Thanks for sharing a barbaric practice. K xx

Thank you for your kind words. Thankfully we no longer have the death penalty in the UK. I have always been against it.

I cannot imagine what must go through someone's mind when they have been condemned to death and your poem speaks of the fear and solitude experienced in these sad moments. I am glad his man was given a last minute reprieve and serviced a life sentence instead. A touching and sorrowful poem Peter, love Dolly x x x

    Hi Dolly
Thank you for lovely review. Even though 50 years have elapsed I have never forgotten this conversation. The prisoner concerned was eventually released and went in to write a play for TV about his time in the death cell.
    Take care Dolly

Your flow in the writing is a little off. A friend told me a while back, to say the poem out loud to check the flow.
I do, and no one complains any more. You words are well chosen, and the picture shows the inside feelings. Karen

    Hi Karen
Thank for your helpful review. I have edited my poem to reflect your view. I agree the flow was not present in some places.
    Take care.

This is a hard theme to write a poem about. I sure like your last two lines. And my other favorite line was:
How does one live with borrowed time
In fact, I am thinking that is a good question to ask more often than not.
Thanks for the author notes, as they help round out what is going on.

This is a wonderful poem. I like how it rhymes throughout. I also like the way it tells a story from beginning to end. The story ends on a happy note, not like I thought it would.

Well done.

Cecilia

Very darkly poetic. Well done. It's hard to see how one could come terms with a death sentence only for it to reverse and have to find a way to live again. The greatest thing is a chance at redemption.
