No way those nuns thought they were weeds, when bestowed by an adoring child, though.
When I moved into this house where I still live, it was May. There was a garden in the back that rans the entire length of the property line. I was clueless about gardening (at least you had an excuse, being a child! I was in my forties.) I asked my elderly next-door neighbor once, when she outside, too, tending her enormous, picture perfect garden, "How do I know what to keep and what to pull? I don't recognize what's a flower and what's a weed." Her answer was perfect and ended my anxiety on that subject forever. "If you like it and think it's pretty, it's a flower, and you keep it. If not, then you pull it. To you, it's a weed." Isn't that genius?
Those nuns knew that, too. A bouquet of dandelions in the hands of child who's bestowing them upon you is the equivalent of Miss America's long-stemmed roses.
Really good read, this one. I'm so glad I saw it this morning. Good luck in the contest. xo

I think dandelions make a nice bouquet. I was a teacher and I would've put weeds in a vase if they were from good hearted children. That being said, I enjoyed you flash story.
I am Greek Orthodox so I could envision the colorful details you wrote so well. Your story was very cute and full of imagery that would describe an innocent child. I was a child with imagination and I asked a loy of questions too. You never know where God is going to pop up at Church. I get it. lol Adorable.
Best wishes,
Alex

It is so nice to hear a story that involves nice nuns. All I ever hear about is nuns slapping hands with rulers at Catholic school. I am sure the nuns were thrilled with the dandelions (the thought behind them, anyway)A lot more than they would've been if you had cut flowers out of a garden! I love how you asked the bandmaster if he was God. That is just precious! Great memory and funny story! Thanks. Julie

Thank you! Even though I consider myself now a Christian and not Roman Catholic per se, I hate depictions of people living a Godly lifestyle as being laughing stocks.

This is a well-written story and invoked a lot of memories of my own. I know your five-year heart was a blessing to the nuns, but lessons must be taught and learned. Thank you for sharing.
