this packed a punch .. seeing my pets get old always hurt.. now I'm ageing and can see the ailments they went through.
Hopefully, old Abner and his owner pass together.
Often when an elderly owner passes ,their pets, young or old, are brought to shelters. The more headless will just dumped them on some far way street.
If the owner is left behind, his/her life becomes more lonely. Today most elderly people are forgotten... the younger generations don't care nor show respect towards them. A society that does not see the value in the wisdom of our elders, is a dying society.
Sorry for the rant ...

Well done on your story. It's a no win situation. If you go first, someone has to deal with the dog, and of course he'll be distressed. If he goes before you, the pain might be unbearable. I can't have another dog. The loss is greater than I can stand. Good luck in the contest.

Of course I'm a blood sucking night fiend with no soul but at least I don't have to worry about aches and pains.

Excellent voice and expression. I could easily imagine my grandparents and their dogs while reading this. The dialect (shoulda, 'ritis, etc.) made it a little difficult at first to read, but once I got used it it, it added a lot to the story.

Ha, grim humor! It is sad to grow old, and worse to watch a beloved partner and companion grow old a feeble.
I can relate to your story.
Some family pets are almost like family. We lost our 20-year-old cat and our young German Shepherd in the same month.
