WINTER SEASON

Winter whistles in through bare limbed trees.

With shrieks of gusty winds.

He carries feather-light bags of fluffy snow

To spread across once green lawns, now brittle.

He pounds the earth with shards of ice

And withers flowers that have dared to last.

I remember snowy days as a youth,

When I was eager to bundle up

And fly with my friends down snowy hills.

We’d laugh and scream all the way down,

Then land in a heap at the bottom.

We had no fear of nature’s rampage then.

But now, in the winter of my own life,

I am content to sit by a crackling fire

And watch through the window

As soft flakes of snow float gently to the ground.

I know the ravages that winter can bring

To my once sturdy bones, now brittle.

I’ll leave the snowy fun days to the young.

Writing Prompt
As we age, priorities change. What was once important to us now seems petty or insignificant. Write a poem, any format, about how your perspectives have changed over time. What matters most to you now, and how do you accomplish what you desire?
