January thoughts
January by Paul McFarland
Sonnet Poetry Contest contest entry

Now winter has us in its frigid grip.

With snowdrifts scattered all about the land,

And in the air, there is an icy nip.

Warm mittens, scarfs, and toques are in demand.

The hungry wood stove sends us to the shed,

Out in the weather – bitter cold and raw.

To keep us snug and warm, it must be fed,

As we await the January thaw.

We dream of warmer days with summer breeze,

Relaxing at the beach, out in the sun.

But here we’re bundled up in this deep freeze,

Just waiting for the winter to be done.

But I must say that it is quite a sight

To look out on a wonderland of white.
