Nonfiction Writing Contest contest entry

The air was heavy with the approach of a coming storm as I set out to walk off my guilt of not being at my auntie's funeral.  I was too afraid to risk getting Covid to make the 3-hour drive and hour-long mass it would take to say goodbye.  I was silently praying that she understood when a gust of wind blew back a bunch of leaves from the well-worn path.  A hint of white caught my eye and there mostly hidden in the dirt was a decorative iron horseshoe.  I just sat there staring at it with tears flowing till I understood what it meant.  You see my auntie had died suddenly in her horse barn.  She loved her horses so very much.  Suddenly seeing this horseshoe after waking this path each day for the last seven years never noticing a thing, showed me that she understood why I didn't venture off our farm to say goodbye.  Instead, a wee bit of her soul came to me.
