Unexpected end to a normal day by Sergeant F. Dare
True Story Contest contest entry

I come from a rather large family, ten in number, to be exact. Six sisters and two brothers, with myself being the youngest.

Us siblings are close in our family, and take our friendship together seriously. So when our eldest sister left home for the first time we found that was very hard on all of us.  She was greatly loved and admired, and her departure left quite a hole in the family, which was worsened because she was too far away for frequent visits!

The time that I am writing of was when our family was going through a very difficult time, several years ago. Our grandpa had just passed away. The days were long as we went through this hard time, and, of course, we were all missing him. Added to the loss of our grandpa, we were also missing our big sister a lot since it had been what seemed to us almost forever since we had last seen her home on a visit, although it had actually only been a few months.

Well, early one morning that same week, mom said that she was going to go shopping. Since she usually brought someone along with her to crash through the store on a Walmart spree, I thought that this seemed a little unusual, but I didn't give it much thought at the time.

It was a pretty normal day ( the kind that kids have when their parents aren't home) and after shopping all day, mom came back just as we were all sitting down together to a plain supper.

While everyone else got up to help her bring in the groceries or just wait to be of help, I busied myself elsewhere, but a minute or two later came into the room to help where needed just as one of my sisters walked to look out the front window at the car.

Then, her eyes went huge, her face began to change, she put her hand to her face, and she began to cry.

"What?" said I, who saw no need for such violent and unexplained emotions. Looks of surprise were rapidly communicated from face to face, and coming to the window to see for myself what was going on, I saw then what they had seen... A tall, slender, beautiful girl, lovely in face and form was seen standing besides mom, getting a suitcase out from the trunk of the van. All our hearts' longing were realized at last as I saw in a flash who it was...my sister had come home!!!

Of course we were all really happy, and she was met by a loving swarm at the door, all eager to hug her and welcome her back home.

Mom had little or no groceries to show for her days' work, and she found that after that we were all too sharp for her to do the same thing to us again. We warned her not to, since, as we said, there wouldn't be enough ambulances in town to call, in the event we all had heart attacks!

This is a blessed memory, since once again we are apart. I hope you enjoyed it. How many kids can relate to "the parents are gone!" sprees?
