He's back from war.
His heart has changed.
His thoughts are clear,
but rearranged.
His life, though spared,
was torn apart.
Confounded mind
and shattered heart.
What can he do?
What shall he say?
His life changed when
he went away.
As life moves on,
he feels dull pain.
His life was giv’n.
What did he gain?
He knows himself.
He’s not the same.
‘Twas welcomed home,
without acclaim.
He wonders what
his future holds.
Will tulips sprout;
or marigolds?
The greatest fear
of every vet.
Will they recall,
or soon forget?
His head is down
and thoughts foregone.
Don’t know if he
can carry on.
