Defy the Dreadful Darkness by Gerard F Keogh
Halloween Poetry contest entry

Defy the dreadful darkness
that repels God given light.
Beware the banshee blackness,
Dour damnation  shrieks delight.
Leather wings and padded paws:
ferine forms of phantom fright.
Searing eyes and hunter's maws
drive the bravest ones to flight.

Far beneath the brimstone pile,
corpses crawl and creep as one.
Baleful faces nod and smile
for the noxious night has won.

Defy the dreadful darkness.
Let the serpents' sons be bred
Beware the banshee blackness
where the worms caress the dead.
Walls of wrath, unending roar,
foul blasphemies are read.
Demons crack forbidden doors,
so our shivers soon be fed.

Defy the dreadful darkness
where the rancid reptiles dwell.
Beware the banshee blackness
where one mis-step broaches HELL!

Author Notes
This is a fond salute to many of my childhood fantasy figures: Lawrence Talbot, The Gill Man, Val Lewton, the pod people and Kevin McCarthy, Them! Ray Harryhausen and his Beast from 20,000 Fathoms, Steve McQueen and " Dave! Hey Dave! CO2! Co2!" And, of course, Norman Bates and his mother. They were and still are ... THE BEST!!!
