Joy Ride from Young to Old by Debi Pick Marquette
Poem of the Month contest entry

As kids we learned by watching, and we did what we were told

And we were taught to work so hard, we started feeling old

As teens we thought we knew it all, yet couldn't concentrate

A hurry to get older, but were always running late

When in my twenties, I was back into the baby stage

But then I blinked, I looked around and I was middle age

At forty we would care enough to still fight for a cause

Our fifties cares were more about prostate and menopause

So many times I've heard them say the phrase, "been there, done that"

It's been so long since I've been there, I don't know where 'that's' at

They often say that in this life, there are no guarantees

But I know of a couple; if I laugh too hard or sneeze

And all the changes in my lifetime happened when I blinked

So I'm just hoping the next time won't mean I'll be extinct

My husband knows I have four guys in bed, but not for~play

Their names ~ Art-Thritis, Charlie Horse, Will Power and Ben Gay

Someday if I become senile, it doesn't mean life ends

We'll still all be together, but you'll be my NEW best friends
