Concupiscence

by zanya

Larchfield Manor finally came into view. It was already two years since his grandmother, Dame Doris, had passed away in her ninety-fifth year.

'Hold the reins,' Edward shouted to his landau driver, William.

Dandelions were already beginning to push through the hardened soil of late winter. Apple blossoms were taking shape in the orchard.

Edward stepped slowly from the carriage. The bays snorted and pawed the hard ground nervously.

Pushing the rusted iron gate, it opened easily.

Earl Edward took some time to catch his breath. He was in awe at the sight. Finally, he had arrived at Larchfield Manor.

Growing up in a tiny village in Cornwall, he wondered why the neighbours called him 'Earl.

' Just a nickname, his late mother, Ethel, used to say. Ethel was tight-lipped about his father. Walking through the village on market days, Edward wondered why people whispered and pointed fingers in his direction, murmuring, 'bastard' or 'blue-blood.'

A few years previously, Ethel received a letter, with a red seal. Hurriedly, Ethel hid the letter in the attic.
Already in failing health, Ethel succumbed to the ravages of the Spanish flu in October 1918.

Within weeks. Edward was dispatched to live at Amber Manor, home of an elderly relative.

Occasionally he received a letter from his grandmother, Dame Doris, telling him tales of Larchfield Manor and promising he would soon have the chance to pay a visit.

For Earl Edward, a visit to Larchfield Manor seemed no more than a fairy tale.

Just after his twenty-first birthday, Earl Edward received a letter summoning him to the offices of Solicitors Wilfred & Soames.

Following the death of his grandmother, he was the sole heir to Larchfield Manor. Dame Doris had but one son, Squire Brixton, Earl Edward's father, who had died of acute syphilis in war- torn Europe. Ethel, his mother, had no rights to the estate.

Pausing briefly beside the Orangerie, Edward bent down and gathered a fistful of soil in his hand. Smelling the earthy aroma, he felt, like he was home. Sadly it had taken far too long.

His thoughts now raced to the future for his own illegitimate son, Henry. Would Henry too have to wait a lifetime for his inheritance?

'Damned concupiscence,' he murmured, as he slammed the gate shut, before making his way back to the landau.
