Bear Attack

by Thomas Bowling

Elisabeth, an attractive, middle-aged woman is home alone. She is making preparations for a festive welcome home dinner for her family. Her husband, daughter, and son-in-law have been on a week-long backpacking excursion and are due back tomorrow. It's a beautiful day and she sings while going about her business. The telephone rings and she rushes to answer it, hoping it's news of their return.

“Mom, I'm sorry for everything. I love you.”

“Suzy, what's wrong?”

“Mom, we've been attacked by a bear. Kevin's dead. The bear killed him. It bit me and left.”

“Where are you? I'll send help.”

“It's too late. No one could get here in time. - Oh, no. It's coming back. She has a cub with her. I'm afraid.”

“Please, God, help my daughter.”

“It's biting me. God, it hurts. - Mom, it's eating me.”

“No! Please, God, No! Not my baby.”

“It's all right, Mom. It doesn't hurt anymore.”

The scene is what I imagine could be the setting. The dialog is an actual transcript of a telephone conversation between a young woman and her mother. Her husband and father had already been killed by the bear while on a camping trip. You can find the full story on Google.
