A chapter in the book Poetry For Christmas, pen 10
The Christmas Test
The Christmas Test
My lamp is dim, it can't burn bright -
its oil runs low this Christmas night.
Why do some children suffer so?
Why lose our wonder as we grow?
Anointed by my Saviour's grace,
why is it I can't see His face?
These questions haunt me every day.
And even now, I see no way
to answer all He's let me ask -
I need to understand my task.
Why am I here? What does life mean?
Is there a purpose? It would seem
that random chaos rules the world!
Then suddenly, the truth unfurled
as I looked up to see that star -
that Christmas beacon from afar.
It filled me with a brilliant light
and I knew then what's always right:
it's action needed, not more talk -
we've lost the path we're made to walk.
And as we lend a helping hand,
rejoicing's heard throughout the land.
Hosannas fill the air with praise,
and our Lord's face is in the gaze
of each and every one we bless
with His Son's love. We gave His best.
