Dark River

Flow dark river in the night.
We can not see you
without a moon or light
and yet you flow
toward your destination.

We with you will go
carried by an unknown
growing stream
that quickly passes by,
as in a summer dream,
and without a moon or light
we too remain unseen.

Flow dark river, flow.
Flow til you reach
your waiting home,
to rise once more
to the mountain tranquil streams
that come together quietly
in the dimming evening light,
to gather all the salted tears
of children crying in the night,
that make the single unrelenting
roaring flow that sets the river free
and pushes back
a thousand miles,
the all forgiving sea.

Go Dark river go,
for we ride upon you
in our own predestined flow,
but not to an ocean home
or waiting sea,
but to the endless distant western fields,
where northern winds will never blow,
where golden wheat and barley grow,
and where the summer sparrows
in the winter go.
