Soldiers In A Row

by michaelcahill

soldiers in a row
marching like they know
arms are out of thunder
legs are blown asunder
                     going home

from gettysberg to kosovo
it's the trojans and the nazis
fighting for what they know to be true
and they know it for you

                     a christian and a jew
                     a muslim and a hindu
                     a pile of dead superiority
they were compelled by god
to prove the truth of their faith
in a human way
it's the human way

in a dimly lit bar
the bullets flying far
and the cannons roar
a kamikaze drinks his namesake
and from out of the fog
he sees a ship
and dives ever down into his next drink
                                         his next drink

soldiers in a row
marching like they know
taking the pieces that are left
and some that they found

going home
