Exceptional
This work has reached the exceptional level
to a woman that never knew

A chapter in the book Songs

The Life We Lived

by michaelcahill

I remember the life we lived

From the moment we met

until the end

That first moment like Sgt. Pepper

Or Jimi's guitar

When I saw you and knew to my surprise

That you were a part of the world

I thought I knew the world well enough

To hate it

But, I couldn't really hate a world

That you were a part of

You.....

Remember?

I could barely look at you

Like a deer in the headlights frozen

Waiting to be hit

Wanting to be hit

Hell, begging to get knocked

Through the center of the earth

To who knows where

Splattered across a universe

I don't even know which one

Remember?

From somewhere I found the nerve to speak

[I do remember being smooth at one time]

So, I said God knows what

And you actually spoke to me

Like some song that never leaves you

So tuneful

So haunting

And thus began the life we lived

And your heart kept mine beating a little longer

And your spirit haunted me as a spirit should

And your soul with but a casual brush

Gave me warmth

Remember?

And now you carry on

Without me, of course

For how could you know

The life we lived

I lived alone.
