Straight Arrow

by MissMerri

In the entryway mirror, Cassie watched her mother apply pink gloss to her lips.

Wearing a slim, black dress, her blonde hair flowing loose, with a single strand of pearls adorning her slender neck, she reminded Cassie of a Barbie Doll.

"Where you going?" Cassie whined.

Mother smiled mysteriously. "I'm meeting someone. You mind your Grandma." Stiletto heels clicked across the wood floor as she hurried out, wafting gardenia fragrance.

Feeling as if her heart would break, Cassie retreated into her favorite fantasy where Daddy was home from Afghanistan and Mommy was cooking dinner instead of meeting some stranger. Cassie desperately wanted to believe Mommy was the 'straight arrow' Daddy said she was.

Falling asleep on the couch, she dreamed her father had returned.

"Cassie!" he called. It was a cruel joke. Opening one eye, she saw Mommy's smiling face. Beside her stood a man in uniform.

"Daddy!" she shrieked.

100 Word Story writing prompt entry
Writing Prompt
Write a story that is between 100 and 150 words. The trick is you must use the following words: black - single - fantasy - wood - pink - arrow - joke - heart - desperate - whine. Words may be used in different formats (for example: joke, jokes or joking)

Recognized

The prompt required a story of 100 to 150 words using these ten words: black, single, fantasy, wood, pink, arrow, joke, heart, desperate, and whine. An alternate form of the word is permitted. (such as whiney.) Writing a story is the easy part. Keeping it less than 150 words is extremely difficult! I barely made it. (150 words)
