Life of a Monarch

Monarch Butterflies

by Cecilia A Heiskary

Monarch butterflies you don't live very long
Your life span of two to six weeks is so wrong
Spring and summer, you have it the worst
You mate, lay eggs, and you die first

Fall generations have it the best
You live eight to nine months, unlike the rest
Migrating to Mexico happens in fall
You fly a great distance, it's your call

You are disappearing very fast
Conservationists say you won't last
Pesticide and herbicides are taking you out
With no intervention, you'll disappear without a doubt

Your numbers of 233,400 are going down
It has people walking around with a frown
If we don't intervene on your behalf
We'll be sad, and won't be able to laugh

Butterfly lover's it's time to take a stand
To keep the Monarch butterflies on this land

Monarch butterflies are on the endangered species list.
Habitat destruction and harmful chemicals are killing them off.

It's bizarre how the butterflies cycle go. Spring and summer they only have a short life span. Born in the fall they winter over in Mexico and will live for months. This generation is the one that migrates.

Caterpillars when they emerge out of the cocoon eat 200 times their weight. They eat only milkweed, which has a toxin in it that they are immune to. If attacked by a predator the toxin will kill it.

Monarchs migrate 1200-3000 miles and they can travel up to 100 miles in a day

To help their dwindling numbers plant milkweed for them and plant fall flowers so they have nectar for their long journey. Stay away from the pesticides.

Legend: They reach Mexico on Nov. 1st, which is Dia Day los Muertos (day of the dead). The Mexican people believe the butterflies are the spirit of their loved ones.
