Alone

She turned off the light and slipped beneath the comforter. Her first night alone in her new home. A fresh start.

Near midnight, she stirred. She'd heard something.

Drip! Drip!

She swung her legs over the bed, slipped into her slippers, and moved through the darkened house.

Drip! Drip!

She shivered. Was it from the cold or something else?

At the sink, her fingers brushed water dripping from the faucet. She exhaled, unaware she'd held her breath.

Turning, her foot slid. She bent and touched a sticky red puddle. She gasped, but her flashlight revealed a tipped-over bottle of strawberry syrup.

 
She shivered, surprised by her nerves.

A soft thud.

The cat leaped from the counter, tail flicking.

"So, Misty, you're my night prowler?"

Chuckling, she returned to bed.

Something moved.

A gloved hand clamped her mouth.

Her flashlight crashed. The night swallowed her muffled scream. She wasn't alone.
