Winter Is Deceiving

by RodG

Slow rising sun above the shrubberies
paints starless sky a pinkish lavender
while white-barked birches stand in twos and threes,
their shadows on the snow a stippled blur.

A winter storm that lingered through the night
has blanketed the hills and shallow swales,
disguised the fallow fields, hid creek from sight,
yet grasses peek-a-boo with glist'ning veils.

Though beautiful, it's cold! Lung-freezing cold!
Where have the wildlife fled? A stillness reigns.
No tracks on snow-clad croplands to behold.
With sharp winds absent, only PEACE remains.

Deceptive is this wintry country scene
which is alluring, soundless and pristine.
