Exceptional
This work has reached the exceptional level
The effect of a broken home. A pawn in an adults game.

Just a piece of paper

by Elizabeth Delaney

Dried.
Patted and pressed, handled with care. Passed to you, a fate unfair.

Presented.
Wrapped up and covered, wrinkles of beauty. Your mind and body unwilling to fulfil your duty.

Torn.
Pulling me in directions unnatural, my edges started to split.
The fault is my own, since your too proud to admit,

Crumpled.
The way you handled me with such brutality.
Folding and crushing me to your will.

Tossed.
Left out in the cold, abandoned. - My reality
Floating around on my own, the world dark and still.

Picked up.
Found.
Love brought me inside to get warm.

Mended.
My scars healed over time.
Once I got rid of you

Ironed.
Flattened and pressed. I now have pages.
My words. My art. My people, the ones who loved when you couldn't.

This is a poem based on a feeling I had as a child.
