A tribute to vets in 2024

The Lonely Vet

by Robert Zimmerman

He's back from war.
His heart has changed.
His thoughts are clear,
but rearranged.

His life, though spared,
was torn apart.
Confounded mind
and shattered heart.

What can he do?
What shall he say?
His life changed when
he went away.

As life moves on,
he feels dull pain.
His life was giv’n.
What did he gain?

He knows himself.
He’s not the same.
‘Twas welcomed home,
without acclaim.

He wonders what
his future holds.
Will tulips sprout;
or marigolds?

The greatest fear
of every vet.
Will they recall,
or soon forget?

His head is down
and thoughts foregone.
Don’t know if he
can carry on.

America has millions of veterans. According to the VA, approximately 35,000 veterans are homeless. They have no permanent home. There are many reasons for this tragedy. Many of the veterans have lost hope and expect life to never be any better. America needs to take care of its homeless veterans. These lived through their war and military experience. Now they need help
