Happy Halloween

The Dark Night

by Jessica Wheeler

October's final fade of light
when darkness rises with the night
They wait to meet, on brooms or feet
and haunt the souls who walk the street

In shifting graveyards, dead alight
to chase the living filled with fright
The ghosts won't show, but shadows grow
behind you everywhere you go

Beware their knock, do not invite
the ones with fangs, so sharp and white
They'll charm you first, to quench their thirst
then leave you with a fate that's cursed

A mistress of the moon takes flight
The silent swoop of witch's plight
And if you hear her cackle near
she'll bring to life your deepest fear

As black as starless skies at night
With eyes that glow, a stare so bright
It growls a purr, to chill and stir
Impending doom in smooth black fur

The shadows cast a gleam in spite
Lost souls emerge, a spectral sight
With freedom found, they walk around
Released from where they once were bound

On Halloween, the dead ignite
to taunt beneath the moon's full might
Your fear's their fun, you can't outrun
the monsters hunt till morning sun
