Last night we had a wonderful party given by our kids at my son's house. I wrote this poem for my husband and put it on a plaque and gave it to him at the party. Making it 50 years with my health was a dream come true for us both.
I also wanted to add my poem to the book to print it all together to take it to the partyl. It was a big hit. A big thank you to all my awesome friends who wrote posts for us. I would also like to take this chance to say I am so very touched by the sentiments in the reviews and in the many pm's I received. Thank you all from the bottom of my heart for helping make my 50th anniversary special! This has always been "Our Song" since the first time we heard it. Unfortunately I wasn't able to dance, but we still had an amazing time. |

Buonasera, Signori Marquette-e. Benvenuti in cucina de Giovani per il tuo anniversario d'oro. Ho preparato per te, una cena speciale. Divertitevi.
(Good evening Mr. & Mrs. Marquette. Welcome to John’s kitchen for your golden anniversary. I prepared for you a special dinner. Enjoy.)
“Aries, scortare questa giovane coppia all'esterno, piacere. Grazie.”
(Aries, escort this young couple outside, please. Thank you.)
Aries, our eleven year-old Dapple Dachshund wearing a tiny black top hat and monocle escorted Debi and Glen to our outside deck where there was waiting for them, a small tray with two glasses, inscribed with their name and the year and a chilled bottle.
I let them take in the romantic ambiance of 50 “golden” candles luminating the deck and 50 tea light candles floating, flickering and reflecting light on top of the pool.
Multi-colored hibiscus of varying heights circled them as they stood quietly on the deck.
“Debi, Glen,” I said softly, “let me pour you a Fernet Branca, an Italian aperitif. This aperitif will invigorate your palate and allow you to relax before dinner. Enjoy. I’ll be back.”
A short while later I returned to find them sitting on the deck steps, holding hands in the glow of the floating tea lights. “Dinner's ready my friends. Darcy, show our guests to the dinner table, please.”
Darcy, our nine year-old Border collie is wearing a peach colored tuxedo jacket and black bow-tie leading them to the dining room.
Darcy could not pull the chair out for Debi, (remember, she’s only a dog) so being the gentlemen he is, Glen assists and pulls out the chair for his wife and gave Darcy a gentle pat on the head.
“Can I have this dance, for the rest of my life,” by Anne Murray is softly playing in the background.
“Mi Amici,” (Italian for, my friends), “your appetizer tonight is a roasted tomato flatbread. The flatbread has been brushed with olive oil, lightly salted and baked with mozzarella, diced Cipollini onion and arugula.”
“Glen, we don’t have flatbreads in Minnesota, do we?” Debi asked.
“Mmmm, I don’t know, babe,” Glen replied with a mouthful of flatbread. “We should though!"
“Ready for your entree?” I asked.
Debi smiled and raised her glass of wine.
I continue. “We have for your pleasure a bacon wrapped filet mignon, cooked in a cast iron skillet with fresh rosemary and topped with a garlic-herb butter. This is accompanied with sautéed sea scallops, cooked with chopped shallots, garlic, parsley, butter and white wine followed by a simple side dish of steamed broccoli topped with freshly squeezed lemon, salt and pepper. And of course my own, homemade ciabatta bread."
Debi and Glen looked at each other in amazement, then immediately picked up their individual knife and fork and dug in.
Twenty minutes later the table was cleared and Debi and Glen were happily satiated besides happily married.
My wife Debbie joins me. "A toast. Fifty years is quite the accomplishment. This has provided lasting memories in the camera of your mind which you continue to make and share. I’m happy to have been a minuscule part of it by sharing this with you in my own way. Cin cin."
We all raised our glasses in a toast.
"Whoops, hang on," I said. Someone’s at the door…"
Moments later;
“Wow, what perfect timing. Debi, Glen I think you know this impeccably good looking group of youngsters. They introduced themselves to me as your kids and grandkids …”
After all the hugs and kisses and the “oh my Gods what are you doing here” was said, everyone settled onto our back deck. Waiting for this crew was Snow, our ten year old golden retriever guarding the dessert table comprised of a variety of ice cream and all the fixings for an ice cream Sunday extravaganza … wet walnuts, jimmies (and if you say they’re sprinkles we’ll have issues, haha), gummy worms, Oreo crunchies, crushed butterfinger bars, hot fudge and shaved coconut.
“All you adults better get in there before the grandkids leave you with a bunch of melting ice cream and no toppings,” I said.
In closing ...
Debi and Glen. On May 18th, 1974,
You said your first “I do”,
From then on history was made
50 Golden Years saw you through.
Now it’s time to party and
Simply rock the song,
Crank up the volume
We’re dancin’ all night long.
Let’s party and work up a sweat
Let the neighbors drool,
Everybody get your suits on
It’s time for a bunch of fun in the pool…
HAPPY 50th ANNIVERSARY

I tried my best to get Debi?¢??s favorite colors, flower and song in the story.
I guess the book is set-up for poetry (which you know I do not do). Hopefully it is still legible as a story within that box. SORRY |

There are so many things in life
that mark our days and years.
Though journeys may be rough or smooth
they're filled with joy and tears.
But I know this, they are just part
that mark the path we take.
The love that fills the life we share
our choices shake and make.
If we will grasp the light of life
it spreads its golden roots.
Affecting all that touch its source
that anchors love's sweet shoots.
We may not own Chateaus in France
or own a fort in Spain.
But we will own the universe
when we sing love's refrain.
I wish dear Deb, and hubby Glen
their love of fifty years.
They know the truth of love's great song
is full of joy's sweet tears.

This is a celebratory tribute to that rare and beautiful thing of being married and bound to each other in the bonds of love in God for fifty golden years. This is my honour and privilege to write this. Congratulations Glen and Debi. R.Owen.

A double Diamante poem, which is shaped like a diamond. Diamantes are seven lines long. The first and last lines have just one word. The second and sixth lines have two words. The third and fifth lines have three words. And the fourth line has four words. Lines 1, 4, and 7 have nouns. Lines 2 and 6 have adjectives. Lines 3 and 5 have verbs. Debi, you've written so many poems for our birthdays, anniversaries, deaths, births, oddities that happen to us. This one's for you, lady!! Happy fiftieth Anniversary, Debi and Glen. We love you. Congratulations on your grand accomplishment!! Y'all rock!! |

From early age love took off
In a carriage, carrying a cargo
Full of promises dear.
Those promises held fast as
Years passed by.
Years filled with joy, its ups and downs
Eternal health cannot be promised
After all, however much pursued.
Right now though, it's time to celebrate
Something dear and precious.

On their wedding day Debi and Glen made a memory box of their favorite things to bury for the future. Glen buried a Magic 8 Ball and Debi buried her toy Weebles. Fifty years later they dug up the box and discovered that the 8 ball ran out of predictions and the Weebles all fell down!
Thank goodness the two of them are still going strong! Happy 50th!

"I do," they said and spoke their love,
A union made in God above.
He saw them through her pains that grew
And blessed with joy and children too.
When grandkids came their clan would swell
With love and pride, stories to tell.
The best is that their love remains
A symphony of lovely strains.
Author Notes | Congratulations Debi and Glen on your 50 years together! Prayers for many more. |

You are the chosen ones
to be gifted with great treasures
not jewels or 'nuggets and nets'
neither plush cars or glitzy palace
But the gift is of rare golden years
of golden laughs and golden tears
golden songs and golden dances
And golden love showered on you
Your own song playing softly
your loved ones all around you
and a million wishes far and near
from the virtual world send their love.
