Incredible storytelling, as usual, and a poignant moment to recall how brutal times were then and how the mob could perform such horror with impunity.

I don't think the Europeans realize how brutal and ugly we were back then. Now there's even a biography that states that Lincoln was, at his core, a racist and only furthered the "cause" for equality because of political expediency. You'd need to ask Judi (Judiverse) about it.

I'm a bit late getting to this, Jay. Other things on my mind.
Great continuation of this play with that marvellous contrast of comedy and tragedy that one finds in Shakespeare's best plays. It makes the tragedy all the more poignant and adds sharpness and depth to the comedy. Your dialogue is sharp and snappy. The reporter makes a great foil for the ladies' wit.

No problem, Tony. I know how having other things on your mind goes. I'm looking forward to the next segment of your novel.

Somehow, your review for this chapter recorded twice. Does that mean you were paid 4 cents? LOL, I am confused, though. Thanks, friend.

Not sure how that happens. Rest assured - the leprechaun awarded me 15c!
Comment from Father Flaps
Hi Jay,
Well, it seems our reporter is going to have two stories for his journey instead of one. He may still get Fanny's life as a stage comedian in a tavern. But he's initially more interested in Juniper's history. I was fully engrossed as Fanny explained how Juniper's father was hanged by the Ku Klux Klan outside his very own home, while they forced his daughter to watch. I believe this type of thing happened over and over again back in the day. Recently, I see more evidence of white supremacy, and it makes me sick.
Now, here, I may go off at a tangent... can't help it. I'm a Christian, as you know. But I've seen evidence of a UFO, and keep an open mind when it comes to aliens from another world. I was watching a documentary just yesterday about their existence, and why they don't (once and for all) land and prove their presence. But, perhaps, they are afraid of us. I mean, what kind of a reputation do we have out there in space? We kill each other... sometimes viciously. We go to war against each other... "wars and rumors of war". (Look what Putin is doing now in Ukraine. It's exactly what Hitler did back in 1938-1939... didn't the Russian president study European History in university???
March 13th, 1938 ... Austria is annexed by Germany
September 30th, 1938... the Munich Agreement allowed Germany to annex the Czechoslovak Sudetenland area as an appeasement for Hitler.
March 15th, 1939... Germany annexes Bohemia and Moravia.
March 20th, 1939... German Foreign Minister delivers an oral ultimatum to Lithuania demanding it cede the Klaipeda Region to Germany.
March 21st, 1939... Hitler demands the return of the Free City of Danzig to Germany.
March 23rd, 1939... Germany annexes the Klaipeda Region of Lithuania.
September 1st, 1939 ... Germany invades Poland.
Neville Chamberlain, who became Prime Minister of the United Kingdom on May 28th, 1937, tried appeasement with Hitler multiple times ...anything to avoid war. Roosevelt, the President of the United States, sent a message to Hitler seeking peace on September 27th, 1938. ("Beginning with the Neutrality Act of 1935, Congress passed a series of laws designed to minimize American involvement with belligerent nations. Roosevelt accepted the neutrality laws but at the same time warned Americans of the danger of remaining isolated from a world increasingly menaced by the dictatorial regimes in Germany, Italy, and Japan. Speaking in Chicago in October 1937, he proposed that peace-loving nations make concerted efforts to quarantine aggressors.") And, pray tell, what is the world doing to counter Russia's movement into the Ukraine? ... sanctions. They want to avoid war, just as Neville Chamberlain did years ago.
Maybe a lot of history on this tangent, but it proves the reasoning of aliens to keep their distance from our planet. Earthlings are violently aggressive.
And getting back to your play, why do whites think they are so much better than other races, be they blacks, Asian, Jewish, etc.? These things boggle my mind.
Poor Juniper, watching her father "grabbin' for that dang rope till his arms give out and he just swings there, twitchin' an' starin'." What a terrible thing for a child! It seemed to really bother the reporter, and I'm sure he will write a terrific story for his employer. It might outshine his story on Fanny Barnwarmer.
Nicely penned, Jay!
Keep up the good work!
Cheers,
Kimbob

Yes, Kimbob, I too marvel at recurrent SELF-interest and inability to learn from history. Thank you for your continuing support of my writing (almost always after the promotion ends, which I marvel at). If you enjoyed this scene, I know you'll love the next one. There are some unexpected turns. I have a hard time as I read it not patting my self on the back and saying, "Wow, Jay, did you say that?" Lol. But I did.

It is funny, Jay. Sometimes I'll read one of my reviews and ask, "Did I really write that?" It's awesome to surprise yourself, eh?

Overall, I did like the script. But on the other side
of the same token, I lost interest along the way from
it being so boring. For, I think it should have had more
twist and turns. Keep Writing

Sorry I nearly put you to sleep, LOL. From the standpoint of excitement, I can't see it being more so. Sorry.

Jay, the 6 stars means I can't see one thing to improve. The voices are authentic. The sentence rhythms are superb. The reader is surprised repeatedly, entertained in full, then appalled. This kind of writing takes great skill married to great effort. Surely this play will be performed many times in many place and for a long time. Jeff

Super job with this follow-up scene. Very emotive and great unfolding
ou jes mind yer way with yer own Howard, ya hear? an' stay 'way from this young man who be jes'- you use jes' & jes here, just for consistency keep to same presentation.
an' that jest leaves Juniper.- very minor here, but everywhere else jest is abbreviated to jes' / jes.

Good point, Gareth. I'm surprised there aren't more inconsistencies, but that is certainly fixable. I shall do that right away. Again, thanks for the six stars. How can you keep them so long into the week?

Hello Jay a wonderful Wednesday to you. I hope this finds you well. I enjoy reading your work, your writing is descriptive and your dialogue is great. Though well written as a "black" man it was a bit hard to read as the visuals of it entered my head, then that's the sign of good writing, writing that makes you see what you're reading. Good Job!

Yes, I'm sorry my friend. My intention is not to cause pain, but discomfort. I think we all can use a bit more discomfort. That's what feeds change. I hope you keep reading this. Your comments are special. You are special.

I enjoyed reading and this is very good. It's a story that needs to be told.
she tells me, cause she heard it from her Mama (mama needs to be lower case because of the 'her')

Comment from Carol Hillebrenner
This is a great story with truths that are hard. But it is beautifully and kindly told. I have two thoughts: It took me three times to read the line about One-one-one, to finally get it. If others mention it, maybe my tired brain isn't completely the problem. Also, could Sojourner's daughter be old enough to have a 5-year-old when war began? Admittedly, I don't know her story anymore.

Thank you, Carol, for the insightful comment and the six fantabulous stars! I was worried about the one-one-one, myself, but you were the only one who mentioned it. I still may change it for clarification.
Elizabeth Albright was born in 1830, when her mother, Sojourner, was 33, and Elizabeth had Juniper in 1855. The war officially began in 1861, but Juniper's Daddy, Thomas, was lynched in 1860.
I hope that helps.

Thanks for the history lesson. Someone else on here is writing the story of Sojourner but I don't think he had dates. I'm more curious about history than a cat.
