Oh my gosh! You had me going for sure! I figured the title was goign to throw me a twist but geez...it all read like it really could have happened just like that! I remember that mysterious "jump" and the missing money! (Yes, I'm that old.) It'd have been great in a kind of illegal but nonetheless satisfying way if you'd have been given that envelope... Better odds than winning the lottery and no taxes! GREAT STORY!

Hi Earl,
what a great little read, enjoyed the tone, language and delivery.

Especially love the conformation to who your 'Dad' was. It's always the mild-mannered folk.

All the very best in the contest and thank you for sharing your fine art and humour in this fictional short story. Hmmmmm, maybe it's not fictional? Smile(((((((((((((.

With our thoughts we create...
an image of family.

Kind regards,
James.

This story was fun to read, had a pleasurable pace and had an element of humor. You kept me wanting to know where this is going and just how are you going to get there. Very nice.

I think this is an interesting story of rags to riches and you unfolded it pretty well; a little bit of a hint at the beginning of what might be in store, but you through enough diversions to keep us guessing until the end when mom hands you the envelope. There's nothing like a big windfall to bring up your spirits in a down moment. estory

Great story Earl. It highlights the fact that families keep secrets and the fact that we never really know people, even those closest to us.

Well written fictional account of family life with a good twist.

Best of luck in the prompt.

Stay safe and blessed

I really enjoyed reading this writing prompt entry. I can see why this would be sort of a shock about this dad. LOL

My Mom was a loving woman who made sure we had three hots and a cot. (because of the 'my' 'mom' needs a lower case 'm')

Hi Earl,
What a great story! I thoroughly enjoyed it, and only wish it was true. Deer hunting indeed. He was hijacking a jet and stealing $200K.
This is a nice entry for the Family Fiction story contest, and I wish you lots of luck.
The only thing I'll mention has to do with commas...
"After the FBI left satisfied it wasn't Dad it became the running joke in town that Dad was secretly D.B. Cooper." ... (I suggest,
After the FBI left, satisfied it wasn't Dad, it became the running joke in town that Dad was secretly D.B. Cooper.)

Thanks for sharing this!
Cheers,
Kimbob

A thoroughly good short story, Earl, and much enjoyed. It's good to see a vet and his family ending up ahead of the game! You lull your readers into the supposition that Dad couldn't possibly be the man, despite his background, and so the final twist comes as a surprise. Nicely constructed and well told.

What a great entry for this contest, good luck. Now, I know this is family fiction, but at the same time I am hoping there may be some truth to the fiction. After all, fact is stranger than fiction. A really good job!

Cool story! I hate to tell you but because Daddy was indicted in absentia, expiration of the statute is irrelevant. You'll have to return the $$$$$, alas! This wonderful tale is rendered with delightful touches of humor. The mystery continues!

wiki:
In 1976, discussion arose over impending expiration of the statute of limitations on the hijacking. Most published legal analyses agreed that it would make little difference,[127] as interpretation of the statute varies considerably from case to case and court to court, and a prosecutor could argue that Cooper had forfeited immunity on any of several valid technical grounds.[128][129] The question was rendered moot in November when a Portland grand jury returned an indictment in absentia against "John Doe, aka Dan Cooper" for air piracy and violation of the Hobbs Act.[130] The indictment formally initiated prosecution that can be continued, should the hijacker be apprehended, at any time in the future.[128]
