Men, for good reason, are often given a bad rap. There are, however, qualities good men possess that can correct a bad situation. Father, brother, brother-in-law or even a friend of the foe should have stepped up and warned the idiot; "Listen Dickhead, you're about to crash and burn. Change course before I change it for you. "Capisce?"

Thankssssss! It was a wonderful fantasy--I never bothered trying to solicit anyone because a top-flight professional actress would be out of my price range.

Liz, you've got a great sense of humor. I read along, with a sense of suspended disbelief, until you finally relieved me of my burden and assured me that your planned "hit" was purely of the emotional kind, and that both of you would survive this (mis)adventure with your lives and your freedom intact (well, as free as you could be, I guess, while married to Dick).
We have a number of reality/crime shows that might feature a history of your attempts to "get rid of" him, but I don't think the story would meet the criteria, since it lacks any actual crime, and has a similar absence of detectives, interrogations, weapons, etc.
Maybe "Divorce Court" would broadcast a reenactment of your case, depending on how you were later able to extricate yourself from this very unhappy marriage. And, for the record, I'm very sorry that you ever ended up in such an unhappy situation. I am wondering how your relationship was, prior to marriage, and whether you thought you were in love -- you probably did.

As to your question--I was not in love with him--he begged me to marry him and I did as the lesser of two evils because I felt guilty about being a burden on my parents. I did try to break it off but he had a meltdown and I felt guilty about that too.
-
The fantasy shows how desperate you were, to get out of your very unhappy marriage. The reasons you got married were very unfortunate.
I dated a guy for awhile, and almost from the beginning, I knew the relationship was a dead end. However, he decided that we were "going together" and my attempts to end it were met with much manipulation, guilt and self-destructive behavior, on his part. There was no end to his bad behavior, even in public.
When I finally made plans to marry someone else, I had to keep it a secret from him, while I gradually distanced myself from this guy. It's too long a story to tell here, but he did find someone to marry him, and I'm so thankful it wasn't me. She's now in a nursing home with early-onset dementia. He's somehow gotten my husband to be his friend, and he whines on the phone to him, every night. We have an occasional, brief conversation, but I still keep my distance!
I majored in psychology, but still haven't figured out what his diagnosis must be -- probably some kind of narcissism, mixed with anxiety, but I can't pinpoint it. There are just some people in life that you have to keep at arm's length. I'm so sorry that you couldn't extricate yourself from this Dick, before your marriage and having all your kids with him (as opposed to someone else).
It's especially sad, because you're apparently beautiful, very smart, witty and sociable. He must not have known how blessed he was, or how to treat you right.
All this is to say, that I know all about meltdowns! This guy was an expert at it, and he still is.
-
Thanks for commiserating--I too was a psych major--I think you nailed the diagnosis--probably multiple personality disorders! Mine was paranoid and delusional, albeit not schizoprhrenic. And angry!
-
Wow, two psych majors, isn't that a coincidence! What a sorry diagnosis for your ex-Dick.
Not too long ago, this same guy I told you about -- when I asked him not to call here multiple times, when my husband was out ("blowing up" our answering machine), he said that I should be thrilled to hear from him. When I told him I wasn't, he actually said that he hoped God would punish me for that. So I hung up the phone on him. No one has EVER said anything like that to me before. It was horrible.
Yeah, def a narcissist. And angry, with little provocation.
We had all been invited to a wedding that was scheduled less than two weeks after that incident. I informed the couple of his behavior, and they very kindly seated us at different tables. I still talk to the man, but keep our contact to a minimum. He has never apologized.
Some people are just very sick. It's really sad. They can't be expected to change. You just have to limit your contact with them.
You've apparently done this very successfully, with Dick.
-
Piece of cake--he dropped dead 12 years ago.
-
Yes, that would obviously make having a two-way conversation rather impossible!

You really had me going there!!!! LOL! That was really clever. Shame there were no takers. I guess you must have just walked out on him in the end. Or had an affair and flaunted it under his nose? Loved this one, Liz. :)) Sandra xxx

Here I was expecting you were hunting for a divorce lawyer, and you surprised me with a clever and unusual ending. As usual, your humor here was a delight even though you are writing about a sour and miserable man and marriage.
Regards,
Mary

Lol! Oh my goodness - I didn't expect THAT kind of plan. You did a great surprise ending making me think that you were interviewing lawyers who really could also be "actresses" but you got me with the plot to get Dick to fall in love with someone else! Funny!

Cleverly done! I was imagining a search for a hit woman. Instead, you wanted a woman to hit on him. It might have helped if you'd have made Dick sounded so attractive they couldn't have resisted the opportunity. He must have had reasons for not wanting a divorce. Maybe he really did love you. judi

Probably not many top-flight actresses in Ma, anyhow. judi

This would make a nice story for a movie! One needs to have a unique talent for putting off women at the very mention of his attributes. Can't blame him though. Where else, could he find a more lovable and talented girl like you!:):) A very strange story indeed.

I love your writing and your surprise ending here. My evil mind ran to men with Tommy guns hidden in long raincoats. But you took a gentler tack. This Dick must have been a real loser. You crack me up!

Oh my!!!! I do understand. I was married in 1977 and divorced in 1982. This marriage lasted 5 years. He was an abuser, a womanizer, and a drug addict. I was afraid to leave. I finally realized he would at one point kill me. I finally got away, but had to into hiding for a few years because he was searching for me to murder me. He found another poor woman to marry. Thank you for sharing.

Horrible experience--you must have been terrified--did you have children with him?

Liz, you slay me! You had us wondering just what you were up to. Some might think you were looking for a hit man, but it turns out it would have been a different kind of hit from a woman! Well done!
