I have no trouble understanding why you decided you didn't want a motor-bike. There are no 'good' accidents where motor-bikes are involved. Good luck in the contest.

JudyE thanks for the good wishes. You are so correct, bad things result in biking accidents.

love your story, or should I say your report of this horrific accident and the scene you found yourself just missing being an active participant. I've lost a lot of friends that rode and I still want (bucket list) to get a trike. Old mamma on the 3 wheeler. lol hopefully before I'm too old to drive. lol good luck

This is a creatively written piece that builds in suspense from beginning to end. It is short, but succinct and descriptive. Best wishes in the contest.

WOW! those bikers were so fortunate to not have been killed-I hope the car driver was also okay. I think that would certainly put a damper on wanting a motorcycle for me as well!

Wow, what a miracle they weren't all killed! Just as well they could be rescued from the trees. Your story has been expressed well. Good wishes for the contest.

Only mistake I found.

Traffic was light for (this) the time of year.

and I've always wanted a bike. But never got one and don't think I ever will...

Good little piece of writing...

I was holding my breath through the whole read! I'm very familiar with the highway, having driven it in our motor home a few times. We also were bikers for many years. So glad they were all rescued. Great story.

Judy, thank you for your reading of this very short true event. It does help that you have personal knowledge of this quite scenic roadway.

This is a very well-written story Jim. I thought your descriptions of the scenery, background, and history of the Highway really added a lot to the tale. Great entry for the Unexpected contest. Good luck.

I relate. In the 60's I was on a cycle with my friend Irwin . We were barefoot, in cutoffs and no helmits since they weren't required back then. We were going up as steep hill around curve with a gravel slope on our right. A semi came at us PASSING on the curve. Irwin slowed down and the cycle tipped over down the slope. We rolled off with just a few scratches. I honestly believed for an instant that I was going to die and the only thought in my head was that my dog wouldn't understand . Haven't ridden one since. You wrote a good story

Susan, ouch and wow! I pleased to read you and Irwin walked away and your dog was able to wag his tail at you near the end of a frightening day.

Oh, I know you must wonder about how smart Irwin was. He was a National merit finalist. No matter how smart kids are, they still do dumb things.

Susan, not really as, I was so smart I graduated from high School at sixteen, that certainly did not prevent me from doing really dumb things over my lifetime. Just goes to say that brain smarts do not always equate to life smart. Ha Ha

Great contest entry. You've described the highway and the idiocy well. Shocking that they jumped off a moving bike to avoid hitting a truck. What a story!
One tiny typo:
as far of the road [should be off the road]
