They say you never know how you'll react to an emergency until it happens to you. Some people who think they'd rush in to help freeze., while others who know they'd freeze rush right in without thinking. And I think firemen are a little like hockey goalies: what they do runs counter to instinct, running towards a fire, stopping the puck with your face instead of ducking. I'm not sure whether that kind of reaction can be learned. Good story in a small package.

Glad you enjoyed the story. In fact, Jimmy was me and the courage I found that day stayed with me through my Navy service and later, a career in sales which took me all over the world.

Well written story that holds interest all the way through. That's not easy with 250 words. I like the fact that Jimmy's moment of heroism translated into a career.

Two hooorahs for Jimmy for stepping up to the plate! Doesn't say much for the maintenance man - standing there, letting his house burn and the homeless man too. We never know when "one lesson learned" will come in handy down the road as well. Thanks for sharing and good luck in the contest.

Full disclosure: Jimmy was me. The story is totally true and J.T. was a "special ed" kind of guy. He had picked this homeless man up somewhere downtown and gave him a place to sleep and the guy got drunk, smoked on the mattress on the floor while J.T. was out mowing or something. An experience like that builds a boy's courage which sure came in handy along life's rocky road. These days, I barely find the courage to hit a seven-iron over water... Thanks for stopping by!

Wonderful, yes there is a bit of man in every boy, and it is good to know that some will call on that when the time is right, a very uplifting read, best wishes for your contest****kahpot

The man in us makes us do the right thing. The boy in us makes us fun. The trick is to keep those in the right order. Just ask my wife...
Thanks for reading my story and reviewing.

Wait, the maintenance man's house was billowing smoke because a bum tried to burn it down. The maintenance man is the one yelling in the beginning for his own house and the bum who set the fire to burn up.
Then Jimmy (at 17), potentially risked his life to save an arsonist. And he's a hero?
Well, ok. The story is well written.

It is not arson when a drunk burns a mattress with a cigarette. Regret I did not make that clear, but word count was limiting. Thanks for stopping by, reading and giving it some thought.
