They are also my bane. This is a well-put-together piece, I'll never remember all those rules, especially, the adverbial. That is the reason I pay a premium for Grammarly.

One note:
'I packed swimming trunks, towel, sunscreen and spare clothes for the trip.'
--> the Oxford comma says to also use a comma after 'sunscreen'
--> surely you've heard about THAT lawsuit.

One note:

Yeah, I elected to leave out the Oxford comma, for now, as it isn't actually a compulsory article of punctuation. I would use it but it does get a bit confusing for some folk. The textbooks don't mention it. Some style guides say you must use it, others say not to. I decided to keep it simple here.

Thank you for sharing all that information about the comma and when to use it. It is sometimes hard to know when to use it or not. We learned all those rules in school many years ago, but sometimes we forget.

I always think that the best thing to do is get a kid's textbook. All the basics are there. Everything else gets very complicated very fast! lol Many thanks

I'm glad I never had to home school my children, but I think yours are very lucky to have you to teach them. My something new I learnt, the fronted adverbial. We use these things but don't always (me hardly ever) know what they are called, or even if they've got a name. Good luck with the home schooling.

I have trouble with commas and this has helped me a lot. Now, if you could only give a lesson on semi-colons, where dashes can be used and the symbol: which I can't remember the name of I think I will... I mean your nine-year-old will be more than ready to face the world lol.

Semi-colons are the most pointless punctuation. There is never a place where they HAVE to be used, something else can always do their job! lol All the best G

I hate them too. I know all the rules, but I get in a hurrry and put them in the wrong place. Half of my reviews tell me to take them out. The other half put a bunch in that I left out. It is easier to make short sentences and forget about them.
