Hi Barbara, thanks for sharing this thorough, analysis of what a romance novel is. I do believe you write just that, and you do it very well. If I have any criticism, it would be that the theme seems a bit repetitive. There's no need to keep on saying how long they have known each other. It doesn't really matter. Love blooms when it does. I should know. My first husband and I married (in church) barely a month after we met each other and we were happily married for 16 years. We have a daughter and three grandchildren to prove the point. Just saying. Ulla:)))

I only do that in my posts for FS because I get a lot of people who want them to jump into bed. Some the day they meet. I take it out of my final manuscript. Thank you for the kind review.
-
Well, that is your decision make. Just ignore them, I would say. Lol. :)))
-
I get comments on every post from the same people.

That's not right, just ignore them. :)))

I am not an expert but I do like to read romance novels. What I look for and what I enjoy reading is two people "finding" each other, through believable but sometimes improbable events. I think romance is self-realization and also realization of someone else's good qualities that gradually draw us to them, even if we hate them at first meeting, lol. It's about finding that the things that really matter, things two people match up on. And it is emotion! The feeling of being in love can't be beat:) Hope this helps!

Thank you for sharing all this information about Romance Novels. I am an avid reader and prefer Inspirational or Christian writing, especially Suspense. I think in the one that you have been posting on here, you are following the rules that you have laid down.

You did a great job, Barbara. It's evident much research
was done before posting. I liked the way you formatted
the information. There's a lot to try to understand from
one who doesn't write in this genre and/or doesn't read
too much of it. However, that isn't a criticism it's just a
lot of info to sort out.
Thanks for sharing, Jan

Thank you. I attempt to follow it when I write.

I'm grateful to you for setting all these pointers down so clearly. Every November I take on the NaNoWriMo challenge (at least in terms of the word count - I have never yet managed to restrict myself to working on a single novel), and this year my main thrust will be a modern romantic novel. I am currently mapping out the bones of 12 chapters, via my monthly Lune Poems, to help me to try and disperse less than in previous years. I think your essay will help to me when I actually come to write the novel. Thanks Kate xx

I actually map out my novels before I attempt to write. I map them with pencil and paper and a calendar. To be honest, partway through my characters take on a life of their own and don't follow the map. I find that very frustrating, but it seems to work.

Well, you already know what my position, I can tell you when I had a crush on a girl when I was young, (although undoubtedly, the root was physical) my fantasies were never sexual, just holding hands and limited affection and marriage, I didn't want to spoil it with sex, I tell you the truth, so I'm with you, and I wasn't a Christian then! Beautifully written Barbara, blessings Roy

Thank you. I have a couple of rebels, who always make me question myself that maybe I should quit writing. Will make that correction.
-
You?re too good a writer, besides you?re there as an example of respect and honour, not sexual gratification.
-
I agree. This person keeps telling me there's no market for what I write and I don't write romance.

A very educational look at both the definition of romance and, more importantly, the elements of a romance novel. You dig deep into those elements in a very informative way. I was amazed that romance novels make so much more money than other genres. BTW, I think you may have left out a word in the second sentence of your essay. Well done.
