Hello Terry Broxson,
You have beautifully depicted the story of cornbread dressing related to your Grandma Bessie.
Lucid as well as perfectly matching the theme phraseology; Smooth flow throughout from the beginning to the end.
Interesting, Indeed!
BEST OF LUCK in the contest.

I grew up on crouton dressing. When I got married, my husband wanted cornbread dressing and showed me how his grandmother made it. Yuck! I wouldn't eat it. When his grandmother came to visit, she showed me how she REALLY made it using either white or yellow cornmeal. Yum!
Your well written story was delightful and heartwarming, and brought back pleasant memories, for which I thank you. Best wishes in the contest.

A lovely little story. Actually, I could have read a little bit more, so intrigued was I.
Sometimes I like to read the homely, simple things. There is always am element of nostalgia and real life, even though it is another's story,.
This almost seemed a beginning for more to come.
Good luck with the competition.
My best wishes.

This is a beautiful family story, Terry. It's seldom that large families can get together for meals without some disagreements about the choices of food! You've done a great job of conveying this one, and the background. Good luck in the contest.
Just a couple of little things: "about half way through the meal that my mother ask(ed),"
"Grandma Bessie said, "it is excellent!" My mother beamed, "It's white cornmeal, used yellow food dye." - two different speakers. Each should be a separate paragraph.

That's quite funny, I guess we all have funny family members who have interesting ideas we don't always all agree with. You described that really well here. Thanks for sharing this and have yourself a really great day.

I enjoyed this though I must confess I have no idea what corn bread dressing is or cornmeal I can only imagine it is what we call corn flour but I have never seen yellow. What you would dress with your cornmeal I can only guess turkey. We might use a bread sauce which is probably the same thing I don't know. Anyway thanks for a delightful story. Kooky

I loved your contest entry. Thank you for sharing this story. I can tell it's real because it sounded like something that could happen in my family. Don't let Aunt June make the mashed potatoes, they're always watery. LOL Good luck with the contest.
But, Grandma Bessie said, "this just doesn't taste right!" (In dialogue the first word after the quotation mark is always capitalized, 'T' on 'this')
Grandma Bessie said, "it is excellent!" My mother beamed, "It's white cornmeal, used yellow food dye."(In dialogue the first word after the quotation mark is always capitalized, 'I' on 'It' & each person's dialogue should have their own paragraph.)

Thank you for reading and the rating! I also really appreciate the tip about the capitals.

You are a primo storyteller! I know these kinds of things were in every family...not cornbread maybe - but some silly thing that divided folks and caused tension. This is a great story and so well-written!!

Oh dear, your poor mother must have been mortified after that snub from her mum and sisters. Some things are better not explained, no matter how much you want to gloat! Lol. I'm afraid that would have been the type of faux pas I would have made! I really enjoyed your story, well done and good luck in the contest! :) Sandra xx

This is a very interesting story...long and it needn't be but interesting nonetheless. Your grandma's name is Minnie and as you say in your author's notes another story another time! So grandma Bessie was picky and didn't like any cornbread that used white flour! Hmm, that sounds rather choosey to me and I'll bet the children didn't care!
On Thanksgiving day the children will play and have lots of fun anyway.
So, give me a break, Grandma Bessie, you are no longer here so let it go!
Take care to use yellow cake mix on holidays around your house!
