Another excellent chapter. Charles and Alain are such opposing characters that they might have to engage in fisticuffs before they become firm friends and allies
And of course the long awaited letter is read for the first time. Alain's expostulations provide a lively touch as well as back story.
Looking forward to the next episode in what is turning out to be a convoluted plot. Hope I can keep up!

Very many thanks for your comments, Julia. I'm beginning to tie up a few loose ends before the final chapters. Glad you're enjoying the contrast (and contest!) between Charles and Alain. All the best, Tony

A tad bit of jealousy there :). This was thoroughly absorbing. So much new information comes out that you really have to read it at least twice to absorb all of it. I see you figured out what was in the letter LOL and might I say it certainly does not disappoint. This was a huge step forward since there I now undeniable proof as to who owns the painting. Well done and thank you very much for sharing it.

I really liked your consistent characterization of Alain, the gruff curmudgeon who has a soft spot for pretty ladies. I also liked how you presented the letter. I'm writing this on a bouncy tour bus and hope it makes sense
