Another beautiful chapter from this French Letter intriguing book. They escaped Lahore, but the future is uncertain. I like the way you end this chapter - an unfinished promise :"The engine let out a screech of exaltation that was echoed in my heart then, without warning, it plunged into the gaping maw of a tunnel. The brief moment of elation was swallowed in sooty darkness and a bone-rattling terror of the unknown; forewarning of adventures scarcely yet begun." Thank you for sharing.

Just when they thought they were free. It's well-written, interesting, suspenseful. Hellen was brave played the part well. I'm so glad his tan didn't run especially in front of the police.

Very many thanks for your comments, Monica. Yes, it might have been awkward for Charles. A dead giveaway! Tony

I am going to have to visit your earlier chapters to catch up with this book... I enjoyed this chapter with its authenticity of place, action and dialogue - I have not been to the Punjab but I have travelled in India by train. Your characterisation makes me want to read more.

Don't worry I have felt that terror when we journeyed across Eastern Europe Tony, in Moscow we discovered what it was like, not to register our whereabouts, but that's another story. So they've played out there roles well, Maharani Helen and a subservient Charles. Jesus actually told soldiers not to take advantage of their position. Well done my friend, excellent story, blesskngs, Roy

Thanks, Roy. I?ve never travelled in that part of the world, but did make one or two trips up country from Singapore to Penang 50 years ago when they still operated the old colonial rolling stock.

Wow! What a chapter. I could feel the tension in Charles' body. That's as close a call that I'd ever want, too. Good touch having the soldier prod him with his gun. Great description on the men sharing their compartment.

Thanks, Yvonne. The tension is beginning to build. I wouldn?t want to be in Charles?s shoes. One feels so helpless without the facility of language.

My goodness, Tony. This is some heck of a story, and what a wonderful imagination you've got. I can just visualise it all in my mind's eye. I'm sure Helen is having a ball. At least she's on home ground. Now what? All best. Ulla:)))

Thanks, Ulla. The tension?s certainly beginning to build for poor Charles. It?s a good thing he has Helen with him - I think!

I liked the way you started off with a high degree of tension as you watch the other couple getting roughly frisked by the Pakistani soldiers, and then there's that close call as they shove you along with a rifle butt. The end of the chapter was really good too, as the train slowly chugs out of the station, and into that black, uncertainty of a tunnel. Its a really great set up for the coming chapters. Lots of intrigue, you have that throw back to Rasheed, on the cover of the newspaper, to keep us on the edge of our seats; one more thing for Charles to worry about. estory

A very well-written chapter about the narrow escape at the train station. The train departs and the couple is safe for the time being, but who knows what may lie ahead in this foreign land.

Glad the SIXES are still around over here too. Keep your eyes open I am doing more in my Rambles either today or tomorrow. You are always a good read and I will miss you when I go but you must keep me abreast of your stuff. Ulla gave me the idea of re-joining on a free account so I can read all your stuff. Can't remember if FREE allows reviews and stuff. No spags.

Very many thanks for your comments, Geoffrey, and for the sixth star. A free account sounds like a good idea, though I?m not sure how they work. Tony
