As to Chuck's classmate--the gist was true, the specifics were fabricated.
As to my citation for error--that did happen--she thought it was wrong to use possessives--many people do, alas--you can't win--right or wrong, someone will surely cite the "error." As I admit, possessives sound and look odd!

Danny ... his mother should have known that slackers are also liars. He's the kind of kid who would bring a dog turd to school and tell the teacher, "The dog ate my homework!" The D- looks good on him, but his mother could have saved herself a lot of anguish.
I bet Danny went on to university, and is now working in an office googling his female co-workers.

I think you might have been taught grammar during the same era as I was, Liz, although a few years later. The things you've pointed out used to be drilled into our brains, and now many of them are cast as incorrect. I can imagine that might be what happened when the mother wrote the paper for her son. The teacher was probably closer in age to the student, not the mother. lol Well written and entertaining.

As usual, a very interesting and funny story, but I hear you. Dealing with grammar has been a frustrating experience for me too, but high-school grammar and stickler teachers are from another universe altogether :-)
I wonder how many bestselling authors would still pass a high-school grammar test!
