Hi Liz, Parrots are such potty-mouths. They don't care who they offend, they just like to gab. Sometimes they tell the truth. Terrific story... I enjoyed the humor.
One of the women I used to work with at the drug store, Annette, owns two parrots. Gorgeous birds. Such brilliant color. But I'd never want to clean up after one. Bad enough cleaning up after our cats.
Nicely penned!

Thanks! The kernels of truth in this story--my son was enthralled with parrots--my ex took him to the pet store--as my ex passed by the parrot said f*ck you.

I can understand wanting such a pretty bird. That macaw could not be trusted around a Dick. He would likely get an earful from the bird. This is so funny. I don't know if it's possible to retrain a bird, or if the vocabulary sticks. This was so funny. If he was such a gorgeous bird, I hope his vocabulary didn't prevent him from someone finding a new home. Maybe as long as there wasn't anyone named Dick in the household. Really amusing. judi

Maybe washing the bird's mouth out with soap would have taught him. judi

And that is why I am so fond of dogs - they only talk with their tongues and eyes!!! Just be thankful the beautiful maccaw, Mac, spewed out all those things before you got him home and could not return him to his original owner. Thanks for sharing.

Okay, now that I've stopped laughing and gasping for breath, and my stomach has stopped hurting, I can sit down and write a review. What is there to say? That was one cool macaw.
This is a story that occupies a spot in my "Stories to Pass On" collection.
Did Doug understand why toilet-mouth was not going home with you?
Did you try to get the macaw when you were divorcing your Dick?
Super story!

You must always look at a gift parrot like a greek horse you may get more than you expect. For some reason, talking birds can repeat dirty words easier than any other.

Parrots and children love 4 letter words.

Well what sounded like the perfect solution created it own problems from the start. The parrot was only doing what parrots do. The woman should have realized this deal was a disaster after the parrot repeated the first word. I can see your son secretly laughing about its word choices then sadly realizing this 'freebie' wasn't going to happen.
Thanks for sharing.
Respectfully, Jan

Yes, parrots are like children, you can't muzzle them. And they don't believe in secrets. And they are like women, in that they tell everything they know. Especially, secrets. Thanks for sharing.

Parrots have a memory like an elephant when it comes to words. LOL

I've heard many stories about birds that had learned bad language or just annoying sayings from their unwitting owners. This one takes the cake! I wonder how they can be taught to unlearn such language.

I too, am a huge fan of Macaws, but have never gotten one. My husband is a huge fan of cats, See the problem. I figure the Macaw could put the cats in their proper place. They don't need to control the house, right? LOL So have a sweet little, very naughty, Dachshund, Harley. He's great at keeping us all entertained. I enjoyed reading.

Once the bird learned these words, they cannot be removed from its vocabulary. I can imagine having an elderly aunt or pastor over and the bird cutting loose.
Very funny story.
