Earl,
Sounds like Dinky was a great caring dog and had a good family of humans and animals. It is interesting when animals of a one species become a watcher of a baby of an 'enemy' species. You seem to have long lived pets. Sorry for your losses.
Congrats on placing third in the contest.
Keep writing and stay healthy.

We become so attached to our animals without realizing jut how much. They become like our children after awhile. When they hurt we hurt too. I too have had to lay to rest my beloved animals.

This is a beautifully written story. I love the picture as well, they look so cozy. Having to say good-bye to out animal friends is often so very difficult. I wish you all the best and congatulations in the contest.

Very interesting. I was never a pet person either, not because of the army. I was just too lazy. But I can see how and why the dog ingrained itself into your heart.

EARL CORP:
I cried when Ole Yeller died, too, and I cried through most of this piece. I feel your hurt and I am glad it helped you to write this. I have a 14.5-year-old Scottish Terrier who is going blind and deaf (with selective hearing) but, at times, is almost as spry as the day I brought her home when she was 4 months old. Like you, I cannot imagine my home without her. Good luck in the contest. Rdfrdmom2

What a sweet, happy and sad story. The truth of its success, to me, is that it made me cry. Your love for the dog is palpable, as is the love he returned to you. Animals are amazing. I currently have a very affectionate cat. The first cat I had was much more standoffish, and preferred not to be held. However, if I were upset, he'd be in my lap immediately, offering comfort.
You told your story beautifully, honestly and poignantly. Good luck in the contest.

My condolences to you and your wife. You wrote a heartfelt story. I've been where you are many times. I empathized your pain and the grief that surrounds you. It is the loss of a best friend, a member of the family. You did the right thing by writing this memoir in assisting you through the process of grief. God Bless.

I feel your pain.I have had several dogs and cats over the years and it is so hard when they pass on. This is an excellent dog tale, I enjoyed reading about how Dinky took care of you when you had the spinal abscess. Excellent writing and strong emotions come forth. Nothing less than a six.

How we love our four-legged friends! Your story set off a film in my head, of all the creatures (dogs and cats) we've had and to which we had to say painful good-byes. It's heartbreaking.
I had a bit of a problem imagining "half Dachsund, half German Shephard". How did that ever happen??? LOL
There were a few typos, extra commas, and so on, but nothing spectacularly awful. In the following, 'laid' should be 'lay': Dinky laid back...
Thanks for sharing this very heartfelt read.

Hello Earl,
Losing a beloved pet and/or having to put a beloved pet to sleep is never, ever easy. I've lost many in my lifetime. The last was our tabby, Dickens, who we had had since he was born. His death affected my husband so much he is adamant that no one can replace Dickens = no new pets.
Thank you for sharing!
